Whittington Castle Seige

March 26, 2017

Well what a way to kick off the season - beautiful weather, good camaraderie and for many the first chance to fire their muskets after the winter months! A huge thank you must go to our sister group, the 5th Battn. 60th Regt. (Rifles) for hosting a fabulous event which ran smoothly despite a few mishaps in the French Camp!

Our first event blog post is only a short one, as unfortunately the 76ème could only attend on the Sunday of this weekend event however it was a brilliant chance to show off any additions to our uniforms as the 76ème's Marauding Unit - coupled with the bright orange pom upon Shakos to show us as third company. This was brilliant, as there was lots of interest from the public as to why we looked so different from the other infantry units there, helping us raise awareness of our group!

After settling under our blanket tent, the French camp was ambushed by the Brits but they took heavy casualties (despite the odd misfire from the 76ème...) and were pushed back quickly! We then took to the bridge to try and take the castle, leaving members of the 85ème, 21ème and the 45ème to storm the walls with grappling hooks and ladders. With the British Officer down and the castle defences gone (including a brilliant pyro the public loved) the remaining Brits were left to surrender and the French, on this rare occasion in re-enactment, were left victorious. We even took a prisoner or two including the Captain of the 5th60th... Sorry Steve!

Overall, it was a brilliant event and again we must thank the 5th60th for hosting, Huw for the brilliant photograph and to Steve, Andy and the Whittington Castle staff for organising.
